EFFECT Photonics, a leading developer of highly integrated optical solutions, announced today the verification of its fully integrated tunable laser InP-based Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC), the core enabler powering its digital Pico Integrated Tunable Laser Assembly (pITLA). Tunable lasers are a core component of coherent optical systems enabling Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), which allows network operators to expand their network capacity without expanding the existing fiber infrastructure. With this milestone, the tunable laser InP-based Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) has successfully passed a series of tests showing required performance items outlined by IEEE Std. 802.3-2022, 100GBASE-ZR.
Unlike tunable laser assemblies currently available, the core of EFFECT Photonics digital pITLA is a tunable laser implemented fully as a monolithic integrated InP PIC. This enables advantages such as the ability to achieve a compact footprint, higher assembly yields, and ease of integration into pluggable form factors. The InP PIC is the only solution to integrate the gain section, laser cavity, optical amplifier, and wavelength locker into one chip. By incorporating these functions on a single chip and including the control functions in the assembly, the user can easily communicate and control the laser by simply providing digital commands.

EFFECT Photonics, a leading developer of highly integrated optical solutions, announced today the development of a new Pico Tunable Laser Assembly (pTLA) to address the growing demand for 100G coherent transceivers in access networks. Tunable lasers are a core component of optical systems enabling dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) which allows network operators to expand their network capacity without expanding the existing fiber infrastructure. Purposely designed for the optical network edge, EFFECT Photonics new pTLA supports both commercial- and industrial-temperature (C-temp and I-temp) operating ranges and offers an ideal combination of power, cost, and size to enable a transceiver form-factors to upgrade the existing infrastructure to a scalable 100 Gbps coherent solution.
According to a recent Heavy Reading survey, 75% of operators believe that 100G coherent pluggable optics will be used extensively in their edge and access evolution strategy. However, market adoption has yet to materialize since affordable and power-efficient 100ZR-based products are currently not available due to stringent size and power consumption requirements that cannot be fulfilled by todayโs tunable laser solutions. Designed specifically to address the 100G coherent network edge, EFFECT Photonicsโ pTLA will allow coherent pluggables to be deployed more easily and cost effectively in the access domain and will feature optimal laser performance, size and power consumption for a standard QSFP28 form-factor. Acquiring the certification process began in 2020 by preparing all the necessary documentation and setting up the right systems for the review. In a two-step process, in April and September 2021, EFFECT Photonics received all the necessary approvals. Through this procedure, the company was able to showcase its vision, mission and values, which comprise its quality policy and its future objectives.
It is these professional systems that help us boost our credibility as a value player. There is an expectation from the end-customer point of view that we are certified for having these scalable systems and that they have been put in place for future growth. One of the things that we had to do for every process was put together a map. For each of the different business processes we have, there is a document that can guide you like a map so that you can see which systems we use, which documents, and which resources are applicable. It also explains how we measure the processes to see if theyโre effective.

VodafoneZiggo, the second largest mobile telecommunications company in the Netherlands, has teamed up withย EFFECT Photonicsย to bring 5G connectivity to its existing mobile networks utilizing photonic system-on-chips (SoCs).ย EFFECT Photonicsโ SoC technology and tunable SFP+ modules, first tested in theย 5G Hub in the High Tech Campus at Eindhovenย and now in the field on a live VodafoneZiggo network, represent a significant transformation of mobile access networks.ย
The successful results of both trials demonstrate how photonics can be utilized to improve network performance, capacity and efficiency, while requiring significantly less energy.ย For the past 30 years, telecommunications networks and equipment have been based on traditional electronic and fiber optics hardware. While electronics technology has undergone many developments over the decades, integrated photonics are best suited for 5G networks and beyond in order to meet the insatiable demand for data, network capacity and lower network latency. As photonic SoCs transmit and process data based on light signals, they significantly improve the performance of mobile networks, while requiring less energy.ย
The successful tests conducted in the field by VodafoneZiggo are a significant milestone and have confirmed the maturity and benefits ofย EFFECT Photonics Tunable SFP+ย andย NarroWave technologyย that can be expected in terms of cost savings, performance improvements and network service quality. VodafoneZiggo is the first telecom provider in the Netherlands to test this technology in a live network.ย The telecom link involved, services a 10 Gbps 40km backhaul DWDM connection between the cities of Breda and Etten-Leur, located in the southwest of the Netherlands.ย

Roberto currently serves as the companyโs Chief Development and Strategy Officer, and he will also retain that role. This appointment follows James Reganโs decision to step down as CEO.
I am truly proud of where EFFECT Photonics stands today and how much weโve grown since I first met Boudewijn Docter and Tim Koene, and worked with them to build a company out of exciting technology. The past decade has been hugely rewarding, and I have made many friends here, which makes the decision to leave very difficult. I feel, however, that the company now stands at the beginning of an important new phase in its development and that it is time for a fresh pair of hands to carry it forward on its journey.

AMSTERDAM โ The ‘National Coalition for Sustainable Digitalization‘ (NCDD) today offers Minister Adriaansens of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) a manifesto that encourages the creation of an integrated approach for sustainable digitalization. By developing and applying digital technologies and data, with an eye for integrating digital infrastructure and combating climate change, other negative environmental effects and impact on raw materials, the proposal outlines how the Netherlands can become a leader in international education. Supported by a coalition of more than 70 organizations, together with the government, the business community, knowledge institutions and residents, the integrated approach capitalizes on existing opportunities, solves bottlenecks and develops a roadmap for a sustainable and eco-friendly digital infrastructure footprint.
The new coalition stems from the Amsterdam Economic Board initiative ‘LEAP’. Together with ECP | Platform for the Information Society and the Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance (SDIA), the coalition seeks to work closely together with government agencies in public-private partnerships and establish the Netherlands as a key contributor to identifying a sustainable future for digital systems worldwide.
Bottlenecks and Recommendations in Sustainable Digitalization
The coalition has formed the basis for a โRoadmap for Sustainable Digitalization which identifies current bottlenecks and solutions for how best to address these challenges. Recommendations include:
- Clear ownership under the stewardship of one coordinated ministry
- Increased utilization of data-driven insights to make optimal considerations relating to digitalization and sustainability
- Suggested amendments to the current transition legislation to ensure sustainable solutions are being adopted in next-generation digital systems
- Knowledge campaigns that provide tools and resources to help educate the importance of sustainable digitalization
- Increased access to innovation, with a focus on the integration of the energy system and digital system and special attention to software, hardware and data processing
- Expansion of the Netherlandsโ role in the European conversation about sustainable digitalization.
“The clock is ticking. Digitalization is an essential part of sustainability and digitalization must also be sustainable. Our coalition knows better than anyone what opportunities there are, but also which bottlenecks we have to solve. We cannot do that without this government. The Sustainability of Digitalization is Essential in Maintaining the Leading Position in the Netherlands
Digitalization plays an important role in developing economic resilience and resilience, both now and in the future. In addition, it is key in accelerating economic and ecological sustainability. AMSTERDAM, 18 oktober 2022 โ De โNationale Coalitie Duurzame Digitaliseringโ (NCDD) biedt minister Adriaansens (EZK) vandaag een manifest aan dat aanzet tot het maken van een integrale aanpak voor duurzame digitalisering. Door het ontwikkelen en toepassen van digitale technologieรซn en data, met oog voor het inpassen van digitale infrastructuur en het bestrijden van klimaatverandering, andere negatieve milieueffecten en impact op grondstoffen, moet Nederland internationaal duurzaam digitaal koploper worden. De coalitie van ruim 70 organisaties wil hiervoor samen met overheid, bedrijfsleven, kennisinstellingen en inwoners, bestaande kansen verzilveren, knelpunten oplossen en een routekaart ontwikkelen. Zo moet de transitie naar een duurzame digitale infrastructuur worden versneld en de ecologische footprint van ons digitale systeem worden geminimaliseerd.
De nieuwe coalitie komt voort uit het Amsterdam Economic Board initiatief โLEAPโ. Knelpunten en Aanbevelingen bij Duurzame Digitalisering
De coalitie identificeert zes knelpunten en beveelt oplossingen aan. Deze moeten de basis vormen voor een ‘Routekaart Duurzame Digitaliseringโ. - Meer op data sturen om inzicht te krijgen om de optimale afwegingen te maken op het raakvlak van digitalisering en duurzaamheid
- Aanpassing nodig van (bestaande) (transitie)wet- regelgeving die ervoor zorgen dat duurzame keuzes vanzelfsprekend gemaakt worden
- Een kennisoffensief dat zorgt voor tools, kennis en mensen
- Zal toegang tot innovatie laagdrempeliger moeten worden, met een focus op integratie van het energiesysteem en digitale systeem, met speciale aandacht voor software, hardware en dataverwerking
- Ook zal Nederland nog zichtbaarder moeten worden in het Europese gesprek over duurzame digitalisering.

Boudewijn co-founded EFFECT Photonics with Tim Koene 13 years ago and since then has been building a company that started out of a lab at the TU/e and has grown into an internationally respected player in the field of photonic integrated technology.
Iโm immensely proud of what we have achieved so far. Although the adventure is far from over, I feel that the team is ready to guide the company through the next cycle of growth. For me, this is a natural time to hand over my daily activities in the management team to my colleague Roberto Marcoccia and his team.
Boudewijn
Today it was announced that Boudewijn would be joining HighTechXL, a venture building/start-up accelerator focused on deep-tech technology as their Chief Growth Officer. As Chief Growth Officer, Boudewijn will work to inspire, support, and coach newly created HTXL ventures, helping them become investor-ready by the end of their nine-month venture-building program. While this will be Boudewijnโs main focus, he will still be available in an advisory capacity and also continue to represent EFFECT Photonics in the Dutch photonics ecosystem.
On behalf of everyone at EFFECT Photonics, we want to thank Boudewijn for everything that he has done and meant for the company. We wish him every success in this next chapter and in his new role, and we look forward to continuing the EFFECT Photonics journey with him but then in a slightly different way.

As part of the Welsh Governmentโs efforts to ensure all residents have access to fast and reliable digital infrastructure, EFFECT Photonics is assisting with the roll out of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services in hard-to-reach areas in Wales. Led by Vodafone, the project seeks to deliver broadband connectivity to 422 households in Anglesey, an island off the northwest coast of Wales. This is the latest collaboration between EFFECT Photonics and Vodafone, with the two companies already working together to bring 5G connectivity in the Netherlands.
The project will be carried out over two phases during an 18-month period. It is supported by the governmentโs Local Broadband Fund (LBF) as well as the Isle of Anglesey County Council and North Wales Economic Ambition Board. In addition to EFFECT Photonics and Vodafone, Bangor Universityโs Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre for Excellence is a supplier along with others. EFFECT Photonics and Bangor University have also partnered on the DESTINI project, for the development of an algorithm which can be introduced into existing telecommunications networks to expedite 5G connectivity.

During King Willem-Alexander’s visit to the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven on April 20, he gained insight into the value chain of integrated photonics in the Netherlands and Europe from various perspectives. This emerging chip technology is accelerating thanks to a โฌ1.1 billion program led by PhotonDelta. With demonstrations at Holst Centre and roundtable discussions at PhotonDelta, the King learned about the essence of the technology, its applications, and its importance for the future of the Netherlands and Europe.

We told him about the applications of integrated photonics for innovations in medical diagnostics, autonomous driving, the agricultural sector, and data communications. PhotonDelta and Holst Centre are central to the development of this new value chain. For the King, this was certainly a wonderful opportunity to get the most complete picture possible of the quality of the unique position of the ecosystem and all the opportunities that still lie ahead.
Photonics is all about the interaction between light (photons) and matter. Through photonics, data can be transmitted at the speed of light, reducing energy consumption and increasing efficiency. Integrated photonic chips, considered a key technology worldwide, enable the development of smaller, faster, and energy-efficient devices. This will lead to innovations that will help solve the major challenges of our time and contribute to a healthy and sustainable future.
National Growth Fund
The Netherlands has recognized the opportunities of integrated photonics through the National Growth Fund. PhotonDelta, the ecosystem of organizations in photonic chip technology, has mobilized public and private investment totaling 1.1 billion euros through this fund to transform the Netherlands into a leader in the next generation of semiconductors.
The investment consists of 470 million euros through the growth fund, with the rest coming from other partners and stakeholders. It is all part of the Dutch government’s plan to strengthen the country’s position as a world leader in integrated photonics.
Demonstrations and Roundtable Discussion
The King first visited Holst Centre, a collaboration between the research centers imec and TNO. Researchers from different disciplines develop new technology for photonic chips and prototypes that companies can use for their production process and new products.
The King was given a tour of Holst Centre’s laboratory and attended demonstrations of the application of photonics in various sectors. Representatives from Signify, EFFECT Photonics, Delta Diagnostics, Quix Quantum, and Lionix explained the different stages in the value chain. During this tour, the main focus was on the applications that help solve society’s critical challenges.
Integrated photonics is one of the pillars of Holst Centre’s strategy. By combining the expertise of imec and TNO, many aspects needed in the development and production process can be offered, such as design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing. We combine the photonic microchip technology of imec in Belgium, the complementary photonic platforms in the Netherlands, the design expertise of imec in the Netherlands, and the optics and systems integration knowledge of TNO to help develop new sustainable solutions in different industries.

The subsequent visit to PhotonDelta, also at the High Tech Campus, began with a presentation on the ecosystem. In recent years, PhotonDelta has grown this community from 12 to 60 stakeholders who together form a value chain that conceives, develops, and makes photonic chips and solutions based on them. The roundtable discussion covered topics such as industrialization, application technology, and European cooperation. Phix Photonics Assembly, Smart Photonics, and Trumpf Photonics Components addressed the challenges and possible solutions in scaling up the most crucial industrialization processes. Following this talk, Synopsys NL and NXP discussed the challenges around application strategies: creating a library of easy-to-use building blocks for new applications. Finally, the European playing field came into focus through PhotonDelta itself and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. This covered Europe’s ambitions around strategic autonomy and the impact of the European Chips Act. Photonic chips have been designated as a key technology by the European Commission. Security of supply for digital technology is the guiding principle in the Chips Act.
Strategic autonomy does not mean developing a copy of the global semiconductor value chain in Europe, but taking unique European positions in these chains where we can be ‘world-class’. This implies interdependence through quality and capacity rather than taking over one-to-one what is already happening elsewhere. Integrated photonics is one such position where Europe can excel.

Photonic integration start-up, EFFECT Photonics is launching its first product family based on its optical ‘System-on-Chip’ technology platform which integrates all the active and passive components of a DWDM system within a single chip, without traditional gold box packaging.
EFFECT Photonicsโ proposition addresses the soaring demand for affordable bandwidth between Data Centres and back from mobile cell towers by bringing Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology to the edges of the network. By using the high integration ‘System-on-Chip’ Technology, port density can be increased by over 6-times and operational expenses reduced by 40% when compared with existing approaches.
The product family includes transceivers for transmission of 100Gbps over 80km at lowest cost and power, together with high density solutions containing many wavelengths for emerging WDM Access markets in fronthaul, backhaul and NGPON2. Industry standard sockets are supported including CFP and CFP2, meaning the products can be used in existing and future systems.

EFFECT Photonics announces the 2020 planned market launch of its new NarroWave โ enabled SFP+ modules for plug-and-play remote commissioning and control of telecoms networks. Not only will the tunable transceivers allow customers to commission an entire telecoms network from the central office and monitor critical parameters in the field, but they will do so with no loss in data capacity of the 10G SFP+ Transceivers . Additionally, no hardware upgrades for customers are required.
Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) has proved itself indispensable when it comes to adding capacity to existing networks. Tunability increases that flexibility and simplicity of use even further and reduces operating costs. EFFECT Photonicsโ SFP+ transceivers combine tunable DWDM capability in a photonics System-on-Chip integration, a unique combination that simplifies production and testing, and results in enhanced optical transmission and low-energy consumption.
As Director of Product Line Management Joost Verberk explains, โWith all the optical components on a single die, you donโt lose any light as you would in with lasers, mirrors and prism connected through air (free space optics). This is a big advantage because generating the laser light requires energy. Our chips transmit light with high efficiency, or low-energy consumption. Basically, we get a lot of light out of the module for the electrons we put in.โ That means tunable DWDM capability in a photonics System-on-Chip integration creates further reductions in operating costs and enhanced functionality, as well as performance relative to fixed-wavelength systems built in manual processes from individual components.
Additionally, EFFECT Photonics has created NarroWave technology that can be enabled on all EFFECT Photonics’ tunable SFP+ modules. Now customers will be able to remotely monitor and control their added capacity without diminishing it. According to Verberk, โNarroWave is a means for two of our SFP+ transceiver modules to talk to one another without interfering with our customersโ data channel by essentially creating an auxiliary channel between the two modules. You just plug it in. It can then be tuned manually from the central office or, with an โauto-tuneโ feature, it can automatically find its way into the network and connect.โ

Information is the lifeblood of todayโs digital society. The amount of data, and the use of that data, has increased exponentially over the last 50 years. However, traditional technologies used to distribute data, from Wi-Fi in our homes to satellite communications, have already reached or will soon be reaching their limit in terms of capacity. There is a growing need for a new and unifying paradigm for wireless connectivity. As part of the FREE consortium, 21 partners have joined forces to develop new solutions that use light instead of radio waves (which is what the 5G network is based on, for example) to create reliable and secure wireless broadband connections.
The consortium will develop the technology that ultimately may enable a โnetwork of networksโ, in which satellite communications are seamlessly integrated with ground-based networks to provide satellite-to-satellite Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). This simplified integration between terrestrial and satellite networks will open up new opportunities for the Internet of Things (IOT), as well as for more accurate weather forecasting, for example. The consortium anticipates that the huge amount of available bandwidth, the inherent security, the limited latency and license-free operation will result in a 10- to 100-fold increase in wireless connectivity.
Prof. Dr. Henri Werij, Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft, explains in a video how this technology will allow to securely send and process digital data at high speeds, with low latency.

EFFECT Photonics’s CEO, James Regan, was delighted to speak to Optics and Photonics News Magazine on an article about: The Post-Brexit Landscape: Photonics Perspectives.
On 24 December 2020, almost literally at the last minute, and more than four years after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, the U.K. and the EU finally sealed a trade and cooperation agreement to govern their post-Brexit relationship. The agreementโs stakes were high; in 2019, some 43% of Britainโs exports of goods and services went to the EU.
For a while, the final months of negotiation on a new framework to govern that big chunk of trade seemed impossibly snagged on arcane details of fishing rights in U.K. waters and state aid to industries. In the end, though, the December accordโwhich guarantees tariff-free trade in most goods between the U.K. and the EUโled to deep breaths and a sense of relief on both sides of the Channel.
The immediate aftermath of the agreement, which came into force 1 January 2021, included some well-reported delays and snarl-ups for imports and exports of trade goods, as businesses attempted to grapple with a suddenly โhardโ U.K.โEU border and new paperwork requirements. But now, three months in, much of that dust has settled. To get some insight on the accordโs impact for photonicsโand, particularly, on the U.K.โs future participation in the new framework program for EU research funding, Horizon EuropeโOPN recently talked with several members of the European photonics community.
Politics and reality
Notwithstanding the eleventh-hour post-Brexit agreement in December 2020, one could be forgiven for thinking that relations between the U.K. and the EU have reached something of a low point in the past several months. Tensions have especially flared over the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, and over the complex post-Brexit status of Northern Ireland. There was even an announcement, in February, that a Cold War-style โemergency hotlineโ would be set up between Brussels and London to handle post-Brexit tensions.
Yet in the wake of the December agreement, these political twists and turns might prove relatively unimportant to the real-world photonics business.
James Regan, EFFECT Photonics CEO explains: โI think itโs important to pick apart government posturing from teams of people actually working on the ground,โ says James Regan, the CEO of the Eindhoven, Netherlandsโbased company EFFECT Photonics, which develops and manufactures on-chip modules for the communications market. โOur governments do what our governments do, but where there are long-standing relationships, those are largely not affected by that โฆ Business is done between people, not between governments.โ
A sense of relief
Regan is particularly well positioned to see both sides of the post-Brexit agreement. While headquartered in Eindhoven, EFFECT Photonics also operates a development lab and manufacturing facility in Brixham, Devon, U.K. (The company has a unit in Taiwan as well, and Regan expects that it will branch into other world regions in the future.) From that broad perspective, he says that one of the biggest benefits of the deal is simply putting an end to more than four years of uncertainty since the 2016 Brexit vote.
โIt was very frustrating,โ Regan observes. โLike all of business, what we wanted was to have clarity โฆ Nobody likes the inability to plan.โ Another frustration, he adds, was that โpeople will often tend to assume the worst-case scenarios,โ an orientation that Regan believes can distract from important issues. โAt least now we have clarity,โ he says. โWe understand what the situation is, and we go forward and build around the landscape that we find.โ

Vodafone first telecom provider in the Netherlands to test this technology on mobile network
Eindhoven – April 15, 2021 – Earlier this week, during a visit by NLdigital, the industry association of the digital sector, the 5G Hub in Eindhoven announced a first in the Netherlands: EFFECT Photonics and Vodafone have started testing the integration of so-called optical SoCs in the mobile network. This optical ‘System-on-Chip’ technology is expected to offer internet providers and users many advantages in the future. This includes less delay, higher capacity, but also improved network sustainability. These chips reduce the need for hardware and will significantly reduce both energy consumption and maintenance costs. Vodafone is the first telecom provider in the Netherlands to test this technology in the current network.
“Photonics play a key role in the sustainable digital future of the Netherlands. I am proud that as a sector we are at the forefront of the development and application of this new technology”, says Lotte de Bruijn, Managing Director at NLdigital.
Photonics: the heart of the internet of the future
In almost all current electronic networks, electrons do the work โ electrical signals bring data from A to B. In this type of electronic hardware there are often system-on-chips (SoCs): entire computer systems on a single chip. For example, the heart of a smartphone also contains such a SoC. The technology behind “normal” chips, although further developed over the years, is already more than 30 years old. A trend that will grow exponentially in the coming years is a greater need for more network capacity and less delay. In order to meet this, the relatively new optical SoCs are a possible solution: these chips transmit and process data based on light signals via laser. This improves the performance of the mobile network, while requiring less energy.
“The first results of the tests are positive,” said Boudewijn Docter, President at EFFECT Photonics. “A working link has been established in the lab with all filters and other components that are also present in a real connection. The next step is testing in the field. This is an important step to show that the EFFECT Photonics SoC technology, for minimal investment, can help to upgrade the capacity of the existing networks. And it is also this SoC technology that has been created in collaboration with our eco-system partners PhotonDelta and Brainport. It is great to see that this technology is now actually used in the Netherlands and that it is also a first for our home base Eindhoven.”

5G Hub: a hotbed of innovation
The 5G Hub is a collaboration with Brainport Development, Ericsson, High Tech Campus and Vodafone to drive results around certain social challenges. It is intended as a breeding ground for new 5G technology. The space on the High Tech Campus has more than 700m2 and is close to tech giants such as ASML, Philips, TNO and TomTom. The expectation is that in the coming years numerous new ideas and applications will emerge from here in the field of 5G and other technologies, such as photonics, blockchain and machine learning. To further enable this, radio technology has been installed in the Hub to be able to apply it to 5G. It is suitable for the 3.5 gigahertz test frequency and offers very high speed and ultra-short response times. For maximum capacity, this can be combined with existing 4G frequency bands 800, 1800, 2100 and 2600 megahertz which are also available in the Hub. This allows companies to take their 5G innovations from idea and research, to real life results.

On Friday 7 August, EFFECT Photonics, a leading developer of high-performance dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical components based on its optical System-on-Chip technology, completed its Series-B funding with an additional 8 million Euro. The investment round, led by independent venture capital fund Innovation Industries, secured continued participation from btov partners, Innovatiefonds Brabant BV, Beek Capital and Optiverder BV, and attracted PhotonDelta as a new partner.

Building on its Full Photonic Integration InP wafer scale platforms, EFFECT Photonics has taped out the Manta chip: the worldโs first fully integrated coherent PIC targeted at pluggable coherent transceivers for the edge and metro/access networks.
The Manta PIC fully integrates an ultra-narrow linewidth full band tunable laser, 64Gbaud coherent receiver, 64Gbaud coherent transmitter, wavelength locking and on-chip amplification for the transmit and receive paths. This gives unprecedented OSNR performance with power consumption lower than a stand-alone ITLA.
Tim Koene, VP Engineering at EFFECT Photonics, describes the benefits of the approach: โFull Photonic Integration means including all of the needed functions for coherent. In some approaches, the most costly functionalities, notably the laser, amplification and wavelength locking, are not integrated, and this creates optical loss, higher cost and higher assembly complexity. Truly integrating everything allows us to overcome those hurdles and create a high-performance, low-power consumption, low-cost solution for coherent.โ
EFFECT Photonics will build small form-factor coherent pluggables optimised for industrial temperature operation. They will be deployed in next generation access networks and be able to provide turnkey coherent transmission over 120km of unamplified links.

Following on from announcing the narrow tunable Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) SFP+ optical transceiver using their optical โSystem-on-Chipโ PIC technology, EFFECT Photonics are demonstrating their auto wavelength tuning feature at ECOC 2018 (Rome) in their private customer suite.
The EFFECT Photonics’ DWDM optical transceiver commences a sequence of wavelength tuning to establish a link with a transceiver at the opposite end of the link. This functionality is host-independent as the protocol is implemented within the optical transceiver.
Auto wavelength tuning simplifies network provisioning and deployment, which is especially useful for large-scale roll-outs of existing and next-generation mobile networks. It also significantly reduces the operational expenditure during the deployment of remote PHY network infrastructure.
The development of auto wavelength tuning is a result of customer feedback and the need to streamline the deployment and provisioning of new network infrastructure using tunable technology. This additional feature is also useful for system diagnostics and optimizing the link performance for communications equipment located in different environments.
Features of the system include:
– Compatible with 50/100 GHz and flexible grid spaced networks
– Suitable for 10Gbps and 25Gbps
– Distances of 40km or 80km
– Up to 40 bi-directional channels

Today EFFECT Photonics, a leading developer of high-performance dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical components based on its optical System-on-Chip technology, announces the completion of its Series-C funding round, with an additional $6M from the Dutch impact investor Invest-NL, raising a total of $43M.
The first close of the investment round, was co-led by Smile Invest together with existing investor Innovation Industries Fund, exactly one year after announcing the tape-out of its Manta full photonic integration coherent PIC. Smile Invest are joined by existing investors including Innovation Industries Fund, Photon Delta, btov Partners, Brabant Development Agency (BOM) and individual investors. This new round of funding will be used to further expand the current product line of optical transceivers for among other things 5G networks, and to scale up production capacity. In addition, the R&D activities for the next generation of optical chips, with capacity of more than 400 gigabits per second, will also be ramped up.
(Integrated) photonics is a chip technology in which light signals (photons) are used instead of electrical signals (electrons). In a photonic chip, light signals can be generated, modulated, filtered, and detected. The chip technology developed in Eindhoven is the only photonics technology in which all these functions are combined on a single chip, which replaces a complete optical system. These photonic chips currently allow for high-speed data transfer over fiber optic networks, but the technology can also be used in highly sensitive measuring systems in the medical, automotive and the agri-food industries. It is expected that future quantum computers will also use photonic chips on a large scale.
EFFECT Photonics is a spin-off from the Eindhoven University of Technology. As a pioneer in the field, it is one of the first companies to successfully bring a product on the market based on the photonics technology developed at the university. The demand for internet bandwidth by end-users is growing exponentially every year. A trend that is being further accelerated by primarily by the roll-out of 5G, and the increase in working from home due to the Corona virus. EFFECT Photonics enables network operators to increase the capacity of their existing infrastructure without having to lay addition cables which is very costly. Upgrading the transceivers is therefore a more cost-efficient solution in address this need for additional bandwidth.

PhotonDelta, a cross-border ecosystem of photonic chip technology organizations, has secured โฌ 1.1 billion in public and private investment to transform the Netherlands into the leader of the next generation of semiconductors.
The investment includes โฌ470 million of funding obtained through the National Growth Fund (Nationaal Groeifonds), while the rest is co-invested by various partners and stakeholders. It is part of the Dutch Governmentโs national plan to cement and expand the countryโs position as a world leader in integrated photonics.
The program will run for six years and will enable PhotonDelta and its partners to further invest in photonic startups and scaleups, expand production and research facilities, attract and train talent, drive adoption, and develop a world-class design library. By 2030, PhotonDelta aims to have created an ecosystem with hundreds of companies, serving customers worldwide and a wafer production capacity of 100,000+ per year.
Photonics uses photons (light) to transfer information. Photonic chips, also called photonic integrated circuits (PICs), integrate photonic functions into microchips to create smaller, faster and more energy-efficient devices. PICs can process and transmit data much more effectively than their electronic counterparts. Just like with traditional chips, the production process is carried out using automatic wafer-scale technology. This allows the chips to be mass-produced, reducing costs.
Crucially, PICs can overcome the expected limit to Mooreโs Law and will also help tackle energy sustainability issues. PICs are currently used in the data and telecom industry to reduce the energy consumption per bit and increase speeds. With data and internet use expected to be around 10% of global electricity consumption by 2027, PICs provide a powerful way to limit the impact on the climate. Photonic circuits will also soon play an important role for innovative sensors that can be mass-produced, leading to earlier diagnostics of diseases, safe autonomous vehicles and infrastructure, and more efficient food production.

Example applications of PICs:
Data & Telecoms: The biggest challenge within this domain is the high energy consumption of data infrastructure. Without any savings made, the share of data and internet use is expected to be around 10% of global electricity consumption by 2027. This includes energy consumption by end-users on the one hand and data centers on the other. 5G, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence will further accelerate this. Photonics provides gains in speed, weight, and energy consumption.
Healthcare: The development of mobile, wearable photonic devices (combined with advanced biosensors for direct point-of-care diagnostics and treatment that measure the medical condition and well-being of the wearer) can contribute to early detection and diagnosis of diseases, as well as an earlier and more targeted treatment. Photonics will eliminate the need for a visit to the hospital for many treatments or consultations.
Mobility: The biggest challenge in automotive in the near future lies in the availability of affordable sensors to enable autonomous driving at various stages. With the advantages of photonic chips (weight, speed, cost), the possibilities for self-driving transport are increasing. This has positive implications for road safety and lost travel time is made available again. Photonics can also mean a lot for battery management in electric vehicles and the control of traditional cars. For the aircraft industry, the emphasis is on sensor systems.
AgriFood: To feed a world population that is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, a drastic increase in food production is needed. But this must be done in a sustainable way: without excess nitrogen or excess CO2 emissions and preferably also in a way in which animal proteins have made way for vegetable proteins. In addition, food safety is an important precondition. The solution lies in precision agriculture, something in which photonics can play a major role. Sensor systems that run on photonics ensure that all requirements regarding safety, health, and sustainability can be met.

San Diego, United States America โ Today at OFC (Optical Fiber Conference) 2022, EFFECT Photonics, a leading provider of highly integrated optical communication products is announcing that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire coherent optical digital signal processing (DSP) and forward error correction (FEC) technology as well as a highly experienced engineering team from global communications company, Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT).
Viasat is a long-established player in DSP and FEC technology. With eight generations of design IP, they have a proven track record of delivering successful field deployments.
From this acquisition, EFFECT Photonics will now own the entire coherent technology stack of all optical functions, including a high-performance tunable laser, together with DSP and FEC. This will enable the Company to deliver on its ambition to make high performance coherent communications solutions widely accessible and affordable. Furthermore, it will enable longer term economic and environmentally sustainable communications due to the ability to deliver high-end performance and reach within a small footprint and with lower power consumption. This opens the way to drive coherent technology into new places, revolutionizing the way the world interconnects.
This transaction is expected to provide the following customer benefits:
- EFFECT Photonics will be able to optimize the complete solution for any application addressing both existing challenges and new possibilities
- With full ownership of the key optical, DSP and FEC functions, EFFECT Photonics can offer seamless integration, cost efficiency and security of supply
- EFFECT Photonics will be an independent vendor able to offer a full portfolio of building blocks such as the tunable laser and DSP, and/or complete solutions, increasing the choice reduced by recent mergers and acquisitions in the industry
EFFECT Photonics has also secured an additional $20M in Series-C funding bringing the total to $63M. Additionally, pursuant to the DSP acquisition agreement, Viasat will be joining EFFECT Photonics’ Supervisory Board and hold a minority interest in the Company.

Packaging PICโs for space applications remains a challenge. EFFECT Photonics announces a new, full band tunable optical System-on-Chip to meet the surging demand for inter-connecting Data Centres.ย This new optical SoC integrates:
- Extended 40nm C-band fully tunable laser
- Integrated on-chip wavelength measurement and control
- High speed, >32Gbaud Mach-Zehnder modulators
These optical features address the needs of advanced modulation formats and are optimised for the latest electronic ICs. By combining the optical functions in to a single chip, it enables full on-wafer characterisation and to use EFFECTs low cost non-hermetic packaging to reach the ever-decreasing cost points the market is looking for. This design block will also be combined into further, higher-functionality, multi-channel, optical SoCs.
EFFECT Photonics, recently voted winner of the PIC International award for Advances in Photonic Integration, is combining the performance and tunability of indium phosphide with the cost point of full optical integration to deliver transceiver solutions to industry standard module formats which provide savings in operational costs and Capex to Data Centre operators.

The optical transceiver market is expected to double in size by 2025, and coherent optical technology has come a long way over the past decade to become more accessible and thus have a greater impact on this market. When Nortel (later Ciena) introduced the first commercial coherent transponder in 2008, the device was a bulky, expensive line card with discrete components distributed on multiple circuit boards.
Recently, EFFECT Photonics and Aston University announced that they would collaborate as part of the newly formed Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Highly Integrated Coherent Optical Fibre Communications.
To learn more about this industry/academic partnership, we interviewed the three lead researchers in this project: Prof. Wladek Forysiak, Dr. Ian Phillips, and Dr. Stylianos Sygletos.

Tell us a little more about yourself and the team
Wladek: My background goes back almost to the start of the Aston Institute of Photonics Technology (AIPT). AIPT was formed by a couple of guys who came out of British Telecom and what was then part of the GEC Telecom Company. The institute has deep industrial roots, and hence the people who work at AIPT often like to participate in projects close to the industry with relatively short timescales. I joined the institute as a post-doc and then subsequently became an academic staff member.
Around 2000, I left alongside five others for a “virtual startup” with the Marconi company, and we formed an entity called Marconi Solstis. At that time, we developed a record-breaking terrestrial ultra long haul system, and we installed our first system in Australia, linking the cities of Perth and Adelaide. Marconi then morphed into Ericsson, and I stayed there for another six to seven years.
In 2010, I moved to Oclaro (now Lumentum), which does somewhat similar technology to what’s being developed by EFFECT Photonics on their integrated indium phosphide platform. I spent three or four years there before returning to academic life at Aston. As for the team, we have funding for three full-time Ph.D. students we’re currently working to recruit. They will be the cement, the foundation of our project.
Ian: I’m of a similar background to Wladek. My expertise is in transceivers, especially characterization and design. I completed my Ph.D. at Aston in 1997 in optical signal processing. British Telecom (BT) sponsored the project, and I worked there for a year after my Ph.D. Corning subsequently purchased the BT Photonics Lab in 2000, and I stayed there for another year. Afterward, I moved to Marconi Solstis with Wladek and stayed there until 2010, when Ericsson closed the site. I then worked in Italy for two years, transferring some system knowledge to the Ericsson research group there, and finally, I joined Aston in 2012.
Stylianos: I completed my Ph.D. at the National Technical University of Athens in 2006, focusing on the physical layer modeling of optical communication systems. I worked for a year at Athens Information Technology (i.e., a research center of Intracom, the largest telecom system provider in Greece). Between 2007 and 2009, I moved for a post-doc position in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, working with Juerg Leuthold to model quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers.
I then moved to the Tyndall National Institute in Ireland in 2009 to join the group of Andrew Ellis. I focused on the design and experimental implementation of phase-sensitive amplifiers and optical phase-locking solutions for these amplifiers.
After 2012, I joined AIPT as a research fellow, where my research interests eventually changed to digital signal processing and machine learning. I want to apply machine learning to the physical layer of optical communication systems. I’m now the director of two Master’s programs at Aston: the Smart Telecom and Sensing Networks (SMARTNET) and the Erasmus Mundus Photonic Integration and Networks (PIXNET), in collaboration with different universities in Europe and Japan.
What attracted you to collaborate with EFFECT Photonics?
Wladek: This project came about through a conversation between James (EFFECT Photonics’ CEO) and myself where he said, “Well, I’m interested in growing research activities to enhance our systems capability, and I have confidence in the experience of you and the Aston team”. So I said to him that one way to build a long-term relationship between a company and a university is through Ph.D. studentships.
AIPT is very much about doing applied research, and James was very much about the value of user-directed research that is close to the market and based on real-world situations. So he and I shared that vision around the partnership.
Another reason was, of course, that EFFECT Photonics has technology complementary to ours. EFFECT can be a source of advanced technology for us to build the best experiments that compete with the best in the world. Our competition is in the advanced labs of Japan, the US, and other areas in Europe, and having access to great components is key to matching their capabilities.
We also found attractive the ambition and drive of a startup company and its ability to make quick decisions. When I reached out to James with ideas, I could get an immediate yes or no answer, often on the call, for authorization.
Ian: James explained to us really well what EFFECT Photonics was doing, its ambitions, and how it aligned with our work. When we visited the facility in Brixham and were shown around the labs, it was all indicative of a company that wanted to get things done quickly, and hopefully, we can help them in that process.
Stylianos: On top of what Wladek already mentioned, it’s great to work with a startup that is more open to testing new technologies. I’m passionate about machine learning, and the prospect of applying machine learning algorithms to EFFECT Photonics’ novel technology platform is very exciting. I feel like there is an opportunity to make a big impact.
In what ways do the facilities of Aston University complement what EFFECT Photonics has?
Wladek: EFFECT Photonics develops advanced components that interest people like us working on optical communication systems and networks. We’re used to thinking about integrating these advanced components into our systems and getting the maximum capacity from point A to B.
We have a history of 30 years with optical fiber transmission, so we have all the necessary facilities for system modeling and testing. Stelios also brings to the party his expertise in DSP software, which is also critical to what EFFECT Photonics may do in the future.
Ian: We also see our job as training the Ph.D. students to pass on our knowledge of system design and how that reflects in EFFECT Photonics’ transceiver design. We want to train the students and get them to creatively and effectively use the components.
Stylianos: It depends on how the project goes, but we can even develop device models of EFFECT Photonics units and identify the device parameters that can meet network and system-level targets. We can even combine it with machine learning for extra optimization of those parameters.
What are some of the main challenges you hope to address?
Wladek: Looking for a greener future is a big challenge in optical comms. We’ve all witnessed it in the last couple of years with the pandemic. We need greater network capacity but also cheaper and greener. We cannot let that demand for capacity just be the same old technology since power consumption would go up and up and up.
The challenges are similar to what they’ve always been, in a way, but even more acute. And we need to do it all without really spending more money. Nobody wants to pay more for their comms at the end of the day.
We should also go in other directions to increase the capacity. For example, EFFECT Photonics’ current components are made for the optical C-band, but people in long-haul and other areas are looking at creating multiband components that can also operate in the L-band. We’ve also got projects currently looking at the S-band and shorter wavelengths. Researchers are also looking at different fibre structures to carry more and more signals.
At the same time, there’s an industry drive never to pay for more. Ultimately, that mindset has driven even more technical innovation. Capacity has gone up, but the price has gone down. It’s a relentless game, and everyone keeps saying there’s going to be a point at which we don’t need any more capacity, but if it’s there, we always find ways of using it.
Ian: One key challenge many companies are working on is increasing the baud rate, which is quite a technical problem. If you increase the baud rate, you increase the channel capacity too. It was stuck at around 28 GBaud for a long time, and now it’s going up 64 and even 100 GBaud.
Stylianos: I want to mention how important is network optimization to improve performance and reduce power consumption, which would lead to greener networks.
Network operators need to maintain large performance margins to secure a robust operation in different network conditions. In practice, however, these margins mean more power consumption. Ideally, you would like to reduce those margins by a more efficient design of your system and performance that can adapt to the different conditions. We can achieve these goals through machine learning.
This requires solutions for multi-objective optimization. For example, we are not just interested in designing the transmitter subsystem, but we want to see how transmitter performance is connected to network-level performance, as measured by throughput and power consumption. This is a complex problem that involves different layers of the system.
Takeaways
Moving towards a higher-capacity and greener future requires strong collaboration between academic and industrial partners with shared goals. EFFECT Photonics and Aston University share a vision around this greener future and the value of applied research.
This joint project will unite EFFECT Photonics’ component development expertise with Aston’s expertise in optical fiber transmission modeling, testing, and network optimization through machine learning. This union can enable faster, more affordable, and sustainable coherent products that give greater bandwidth to a greener future.

Only 6 months after the successful launch of its 100Gbps DWDM transceiver product family in March 2016, EFFECT Photonics is now demonstrating the ability to achieve 500Gbps using PAM-4 (4-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation) up to 75km, with its Optical โSystem-on-Chipโ photonic integration technology. This is the result of ongoing collaboration with the Technical University of Eindhoven, with further developments in the pipeline.
With Internet traffic expected to grow at an annual rate of 22-25% until 2020, the majority of this growth is coming from interconnecting Data Centres and in the Metro-Access segments. The need to reduce cost, power, and size continues to be a major driver of product innovation.
EFFECT Photonics is addressing this need with its Optical โSystem-on-Chipโ photonic integration platform by combining all of the optical functions into a single chip, and packaging this with its own low-cost โgold-box freeโ packaging technology. The optical functions include: multiple DBR lasers, low-voltage drive MZ modulators, AWG, and wavelength monitoring, all within the single chip.

EFFECT Photonics today announced that it has closed its Series-A funding to bring its Optical System-on-Chip technology to market to meet the soaring demand for bandwidth in cell towers and between datacentres. The first close of the investment round was led by investment company b-to-v Partners, and included the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) and Optidob. EFFECT Photonics develops and delivers highly integrated optical components based on InP (Indium Phosphide) which is the material of choice for combining efficient laser light sources, waveguides, modulators, amplifiers, and photodiodes used in optical communication systems throughout the world. Using EFFECT Photonicsโ System-on-Chip Technology, port density can be increased by over 6-times and operational expenses reduced by 40% when compared with existing approaches.

As the capacity needed in cell towers soars with the latest Cloud RAN architectures, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing is required, delivering 40 or even 80 wavelengths on the fiber. This brings challenges in operational complexity to manage this many part codes from supply chain and deployment to the cell towers. Tunable wavelength lasers can solve this, but traditional full-band tunable modules are too expensive for this application.
Leveraging its optical System-on-Chip technology with advanced photonic integration and low-cost packaging, EFFECT Photonics provides an optimized solution dramatically reducing the number of part-codes at a cost point which meets the needs of Mobile networks.

EFFECT Photonics, a leading developer of high performance DWDM optical components based on its optical System-on-Chip, today announced the completion of its series-B funding round led by Innovation Industries.
The funding round accelerates the ramp of its tunable SFP production line and the development of future technologies. EFFECT Photonics addresses the need for low-cost, wavelength-tunable optical transceivers with industrial temperature specification to be deployed within the next generation 5G mobile infrastructure. The global market demand for optical transceivers is expected to grow to $12bn by 2023, from $6bn in 2017 (Lightcounting, 2018).
5G mobile or fifth-generation wireless communication will enable interconnectivity with many different devices such as:
– HD-streaming smartphones
– Driverless and intelligence assisted vehicles
– HD and โalways onโ security cameras
– Augmented and Virtual Reality (A/VR)
This in turn will accelerate the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) interconnecting computing devices and machines without the need for human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. The number of connected devices in 2017 was 20.35bn (worth over $1bn annually) and is expected to rise to 51.1bn connected devices by 2023 (Statista 2018).
