The deployment of pluggable coherent optical modules has enabled service providers to re-architect their DCI and metro optical networks. These modules can be plugged directly into switches and routers, removing the need for dedicated optical transport systems and enabling the transport of IP traffic directly over DWDM with the use of open line systems (IPoDWDM). The same 7nm DSPs and optics are used in 400ZR modules for links up to 120km and ZR+ modules for links of 600km and beyond. The development of 5nm and 3nm DSPs is enabling a new generation of pluggable modules that will support enhanced 400G performance and reach, 800G performance, including 800ZR, and 100G modules designed for the edge of the network.
This session will investigate the benefits already delivered by using coherent pluggable modules and the new opportunities being enabled by the latest developments. Topics will include: The current pluggable coherent landscape What we have learned from 400G coherent pluggable deployments Technology developments for coherent pluggables Where next: cost effective 100G, enhanced 400G, 800G and beyond.
FSO has often been talked about as some futuristic technology to be used in space applications. Register for our webinar to find out more.
FSO has often been talked about as some futuristic technology to be used in space applications, but it can be used more than that, including ground-to-ground links in access networks. FSO can deliver a wireless access solution that can be deployed quickly and with more bandwidth capacity, security features, and less power consumption than traditional point-to-point microwave links. Furthermore, since it does not use the RF spectrum, there is no need to secure spectrum licenses.
FSO struggled to break through Into practical applications despite these benefits because of certain technical challenges. Communications infrastructure, therefore, focused on more stable transmission alternatives such as optical fiber and RF signals. However, research and innovation over the last few decades are removing these technical barriers.
One obstacle to achieving longer distances with FSO had to do with the quality of the laser signal. Over time, FSO developers have found a solution to this issue in adaptive optics systems. These systems compensate for distortions in the beam by using an active optical element—such as a deformable mirror or liquid crystal—that dynamically changes its structure depending on the shape of the laser beam. Dutch startup Aircision uses this kind of technology in its FSO systems to increase their tolerance to atmospheric disruptions.
Another drawback of FSO is aligning the transmitter and receiver units. Laser beams are extremely narrow, and if the beam doesn’t hit the receiver lens at just the right angle, the information may be lost. The system requires almost perfect alignment, and it must maintain this alignment even when there are small changes in the beam trajectory due to wind or atmospheric disturbances. FSO systems can handle these alignment issues with fast steering mirror (FSM) technology. These mirrors are driven with electrical signals and are fast, compact, and accurate enough to compensate the disturbances in the beam trajectory.
However, even if the system can maintain the beam trajectory and shape, atmospheric turbulence can still degrade the message and cause interference in the data. Fortunately, FSO developers also use sophisticated digital signal processing techniques (DSP) to compensate for these impairments. These DSP techniques allow for reliable, high-capacity, quick deployments even through thick clouds and fog.
FSO links can now handle Gbps capacity over several kilometers thanks to all these technological advances. For example, a collaboration between Aircision and TNO demonstrated in 2021 that their FSO systems could reliably transmit 10 Gbps over 2.5 km.

1. 10Gbps 40km DWDM Narrow Tunable SFP+ module with industrial temperature range and low power consumption
EFFECT Photonics’ 10Gbps 40km DWDM Narrow Tunable SFP+ module is designed to operate from 1Gbps to 11.3Gbps, is hot pluggable, has narrow band tunability, and is compatible with multiple network applications and transmission formats such as 10GE, CPRI, OTN, Fibre Channel. The module which is now in full production is optimised especially for MBH (Mobile Backhaul) and Fibre Services with 10GE and CPRI as protocols, Local Area Networks (LAN), and Mobile Fronthaul over single-mode fibre (SMF) optical links, P2P and passive networks. Reduces sparing and configuring costs in optical networks significantly. With more than six channels available per module, narrow tunable modules are well suited for fronthaul deployments, where remote radio heads use multiples of three antennas to cover a full 360 degrees. Especially important with regard to green computing aspirations and 5G-XHaul applications, is the low power of these modules with typical power consumption of 1.8W (max. 2W) compared to the 2.3-2.5W typically seen in tunable modules. All these different elements combined make narrow tunable modules the perfect match for current and future networks.

Interested in what EFFECT Photonics is working on right now?
Narrow Tunable SFP+ Transceivers for Next Generation Mobile Networks
In response to the exponentially growing demand for bandwidth at the edges of the network, EFFECT Photonics is now shipping its narrow tunable SFP+ transceiver targeted at next generation mobile networks. Designed to withstand the most demanding of circumstances, these modules can operate in the freezing temperatures of northern Canada, but also in the blistering heat of Vietnam. Our transceivers are equipped with our latest System-on-Chip (SoC) technology, which is best-in-class. This technology enables seamless operation and an easy upgrade path from 1G to 10G. Plugs can be used in both 1G and 10G protocols (and in between), enabling users to upgrade the network using the same plugs. With more than six channels available per module, narrow tunable modules are well suited for fronthaul deployments, where remote radio heads use multiples of three antennas to cover a full 360 degrees. All these different elements combined, make narrow tunable modules the perfect match for the fronthaul networks of the future.
NarroWave enabled SFP+ modules
At ECOC 2020, EFFECT Photonics is demonstrating its NarroWave enabled SFP+ modules. By using NarroWave enabled modules network operators can drive down cost and speed up service delivery. This is achieved by maximizing fibre capacity without the need to replace telecom equipment in the field. NarroWave enabled modules are completely agnostic and work with any network element that supports third-party optics. NarroWave enabled modules reduce operational cost, since they remove the need for special training or test equipment for field engineers, making the upgrade from fixed to tunable very easy. Additionally, NarroWave enabled modules increase quality of service, through remote diagnostics. This way, operators can quickly trace a fault in the field from the central office, thereby reducing disaster recovery times. This makes EFFECT Photonics’ SFP+ modules a powerful asset in the toolkit of any telecom provider looking to drive down cost and increase quality of service of its telecommunication network.

4 WEEKS of fireside chats, showroom, pitching and networking
Our CEO, James Regan, will be taking the stage at pitches and panel discussions and will give insight into the EFFECT Photonics’ unique integrated photonics technology. EFFECT Photonics is the first company in the world to introduce a full optical system-on-chip (SoC) – combining all the optical elements needed for optical networking onto a single die. One key application of EFFECT Photonics’ SoC technology is within dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), and this is regarded as an important innovation in optical networks. DWDM is scalable, transparent and enables provision of high-bandwidth services. It is the technology of choice for many networking applications today. By using many different wavelengths of light to route data, these systems are more efficient, flexible, and cost-effective to build, own and operate compared to single-channel, point-to-point links. Thanks to our high-density electrical interconnect and packaging technology, the optical system-on-a-chip can be assembled for volume manufacture at low cost.
Let us talk at our virtual booth at INPHO Venture Summit, we will show how EFFECT Photonics will revolutionize the integrated photonics market with our Optical SoC technology.

NarroWave Enabled SFP+ Modules
At ECOC 2019 EFFECT Photonics is demonstrating its NarroWave enabled SFP+ modules. NarroWave is a new feature that allows customers to monitor and control remote SFP+ modules from the central office, without making any hardware or software changes in the field. NarroWave is agnostic of vendor equipment, data rate or the protocol of the in-band traffic. The host at the central office can access the remote digital diagnostics and monitoring by reading dedicated memory pages of the local SFP+, which are a mirror of the host device. This feature can also be used to send commands to a remote device, which enables use-cases such as automatic tuning and automatic power-balancing. This makes EFFECT Photonics’ SFP+ modules a powerful asset in the toolkit of any telecom provider looking to dynamically control and monitor its telecommunication network. Examples of NarroWave applications will be demonstrated live at EFFECT Photonics’ booth #317.
EFFECT Photonics Is Launching Their First Product
Based on our ‘Optical System-on-Chip’ technology EFFECT Photonics is launching their first product into the market. Our Narrowband Tunable SFP+ can be used for Mobile Fronthaul applications. It supports Industrial Temperature operation, allowing customers to use in it in outdoor environments. With a reach of up to 80 km, it can be used in virtually any Fronthaul network. This tunable solution brings flexible and affordable DWDM to the edges of the network.
