Digital Marketing Intern

“The most interesting part of working here is that the company is transitioning from a start-up with this crazy idea that could be quite big in the technology market, to a fully-fledged company that is soon set to launch a product.”

What is the most interesting aspect of working at EFFECT Photonics? And what about your job specifically?

The most interesting part of working here is that the company is transitioning from a start-up with this crazy idea that could be quite big in the technology market, to a fully-fledged company that is soon set to launch a product. My role as a digital marketing intern I feel signifies that, as the company has grown, there has become more of a need to assist on the marketing strategy and establish EFFECT Photonics’ presence. In addition to making it ready to become a key player in the photonics market. What I like about my job specifically is the freedom to have my own input into my own tasks, I feel comfortable discussing with anyone in the company what I am working on. My supervisor is very receptive to new suggestions and is always looking for ways to improve. Additionally, the office is very laid back and has a good mix of informal and formal, so I feel very comfortable to be myself here. I also really enjoy the international environment; it feels very welcoming as an international employee myself to be surrounded by so many other international colleagues. This for me creates a pleasant work environment.

What advice would you give to someone who is planning to apply at EFFECT Photonics?

My advice, coming from someone who does not have a technical or engineering background, is to consider the needs and aims of the company. Every company has its own business departments and functions outside of developing the product. Specifically, for EFFECT Photonics, is that you never know when and why a company may need new employees. I was just one of the many new arrivals in the particular month I joined, so you never know what may happen if you send a speculative application, no matter if you have a technical background or another background. There is likely to be fit somewhere here at EFFECT Photonics, you just have to be proactive.

Describe in 3 words what your job is all about.

Creativity, flexibility and collaboration.

In the world of marketing, especially for content creation you have to be creative in your execution of ideas, especially in the world of Photonics as it is highly technical, and you really have to think about what marketing activities are going to work best here. Secondly, you need to be flexible as the subjective nature of marketing projects means you always need to be open to new ideas and inputs when it comes to working with others. Finally, I find collaboration highly important. The technical nature of the products means that working here is a constant learning process in trying to better understand them to ensure you can better market them. Therefore, you need to be collaborative with other employees to ensure that you can achieve this.

“My word matters, people trust me and make me feel like an expert, I do not feel like a student here”

What is the most interesting aspect of working at EFFECT Photonics? And what about your job specifically?

What I like about my job is that it is always changing, and the product is always developing. I am always learning new stuff at EFFECT Photonics. Because I am an apprentice, I get to see lots of different parts of the business, not just one area. There are lots of opportunities for me to develop my skills. I recently was sent on a 3-day training course and learned to use how to use a new microscope. Which was a great professional development opportunity. The people are friendly, and it is a nice place to work. As an apprentice, I am working part-time at EFFECT Photonics and I am also part-time at college. So, I am learning and working at the same time. I came to EFFECT Photonics after returning to Brixham after working abroad, I then spoke to a friend who already was working here who encouraged me to apply. I was worried as I did not have an engineering background, however, he said it was not a problem as they offer apprenticeship programmes that allow you to learn on the job. I then thought I would try it out, and it worked out very well. I have now been here for over a year. I sometimes have to work with colleagues in the Dutch office, I am surprised how quick their response times are and I have had no problems with working with them

What advice would you give to someone who is planning to apply at EFFECT Photonics?

I would advise just to apply, there is a great work environment here. I think you have to be confident in being able to work by yourself. There is not too much structure here, you are trusted to go about your own responsibilities. There are no hard deadlines, you are expected to define them yourself. Therefore, you then have to be confident in yourself. There is also a good support system here, if you don’t feel like you know what you are doing, everyone is very friendly, open and knowledgeable. You never feel like you are on your own. I feel that it makes you work better, as you know that people have trust in you. I have had meetings where I have presented findings of what I think is working and what is not, people here listen to me and then go on to pass on such findings to suppliers, which is really positive for me. Despite being an apprentice, I still feel like an employee. I don’t feel there is a big difference between me and other employees, and I feel valued for my work. I have worked in many types of roles, and for me, this one at EFFECT Photonics is the best. I never think about leaving because I truly like it here.

Describe in 3 words what your job is all about.

Learning, changing and developing.

I do lots of different tasks within the company, so the environment is always changing. It is never the same here and does not feel repetitive. Part of my responsibilities is to do incoming inspections. I oversee all the parts that come onto the production line before they built into the final modules. I also get involved with the module builds themselves, so I get to see the entire process from start to finish.

What is your biggest highlight of working here so far?

We organize several team-building events, such as quiz-nights. Which is nice as people like to socialize outside of work. It creates a nice social environment here, like a tightly knit community.

Chip Engineering Manager

“We grew together with EFFECT Photonics, I started as an engineer and I got promoted to engineering manager of a group of 12 people”

What is the most interesting aspect of working at EFFECT Photonics? And what about your job specifically?

My motivation to come to EFFECT Photonics was to shift from an academic to a business environment. At a company you can focus as a team on a single objective. Instead of being scattered over multiple research areas, all people at EFFECT Photonics focus on a single project and goal. Coming from a PhD where I was the only Dutch candidate, managing a multi-cultural team is no big change for me. I do operate from a Dutch perspective, my team gets the impression that Dutch companies are fairly flat. Although there is a formal management hierarchy, the work environment is very open and friendly. I try to be as approachable as possible. Decisions are the result of discussions with the team and weighing that against other business requirements. As a manager, I can lean on a strong technical background to be able to make correct decisions and guide the team to the best approaches. As my team is quite big, members are expected to be quite independent. This creates a lot of independence within people’s roles.

What advice would you give to someone who is planning to apply at EFFECT Photonics?

What me and my team do, is central to the company. It is a nice position to be in. It means we have a lot of interaction and dependency. Because of this central role, expectations are high and there is pressure to get good results. We deal with this by working very precisely and thoroughly preparing any designs we send out for manufacture. I feel that there is a very solution-focused environment here at EFFECT Photonics, where taking initiative is rewarded. I’d say join us if you want to be a part of a team developing high-tech solutions for the telecommunications industry.

Describe in 3 words what your job is all about.

Challenges, learning, advancement

I joined EFFECT Photonics during its early beginnings in 2014. I had just finished my PhD and was looking for work. I knew the co-founders of the company via the Technical University of Eindhoven and I was able to help them out with some odd jobs here and there. My role initially was very undefined as the company was in its early stages. When the company got its first round of funding, I was brought on for a full-time position. I really grew with the company, initially as an engineer and then I became an engineering manager, where I came to lead an ever-expanding team. I still love the engineering work itself, but managing a team of people is also very rewarding. EFFECT Photonics is a very high-tech environment, there is always a lot of cool stuff going on. Few companies do what we are doing. We are really trying to bring about lower cost solutions, which does come with engineering challenges. We have a very skilled and talented team, and I have full confidence that we will solve these challenges.

What is your biggest highlight of working here so far?

I think for me it is seeing the level of commitment from the team. Every one is prepared to go the extra mile in order to get good results. Additionally, there is a lot of excitement here, there is a buzz when you get new results. The wafer has only been in the office for an hour and you already get messages from colleagues eagerly waiting for the results. It’s this buzz that is a real highlight for me.
