Where Light Meets Digital

In the always-evolving world of communications, coherent optics has deeply improved the ability to transmit at high capacity over vast distances. Coherent transmission is not a new concept, but a breakthrough in the early 2000’s made coherent systems more economically viable and therefore a big part of optical networks. 

Coherent transmission improves the range and capacity of data transmission by encoding information in other properties of a light wave such as intensity, phase and polarization. This allows for more data to be transmitted over longer distances than for instance with direct detect transmission that uses the intensity of a light wave.

Coherent optics is the embodiment of Where Light Meets Digital as it requires at least two key technologies, the DSP and a tunable laser, both of which EFFECT Photonics owns and controls.
