Principal Laser Characterization & Calibration Architect

ROLE

Your role as a Principal Laser Characterization & Calibration Architect

EFFECT Photonics is a technology scale-up founded in Eindhoven. We develop highly sophisticated optical sub-assemblies (OSAs), including, among others, high-performance lasers for the data- and telecommunications market.

We are seeking to expand the optical sub-assembly design team with a highly skilled Laser Characterization and Calibration Architect. The candidate is expected to have deep knowledge of experiment design, parameter estimation and signal processing. On top of the theoretical background, we are looking for a person experienced in instrument control and Python development for calibration automation and data processing. Laser physics understanding and familiarity with optical test equipment are highly appreciated.

Every tunable laser is calibrated as part of our production line to ensure they tune to exactly the right optical frequency and power. As a Laser Characterization and Calibration Architect you will be responsible for the framework that automates this process. This framework builds multivariate models of laser behaviour to predict suitable setpoints for our tuneable laser produDescts. The role involves strong cooperation with other team members on electronics, mechanics, optics and thermal design aspects. It also requires working together with firmware developers to ensure correct OSA behaviour during and after calibration. Furthermore, the candidate will manage the calibration process transfer to operations.

At EFFECT Photonics we value ownership. Our new colleague will be given the autonomy to take charge of their projects and drive innovative solutions. We work in a multi-disciplinary environment, where the new hire will be the go-to expert in the calibration process and be assisted by other highly knowledgeable colleagues from adjacent domains.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD degree in System Identification, Data Science or Telecommunication.
  • Proven track record of multivariate system calibration development for high accuracy products and preferably release in volume manufacturing.
  • Deep knowledge of parameter and model estimation from experimental data and experiment design.
  • Deep knowledge of filtering and classification techniques.
  • Experience with image processing in the system calibration context.
  • Experience in identification of static maps and preferably dynamical systems.
  • Proficient in Python development for data analysis and instrument control.
  • Semiconductor laser physics understanding and experience with laser characterization is a significant plus.
  • Good general physics knowledge for understand cross-disciplinary interactions.
  • Great reporting and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Own calibration framework development from architecture and implementation all the way to release into operations.
  • Design and implement multivariate models to predict suitable laser operating setpoints.
  • Design and implement routines to verify accuracy and stability of predicted setpoints.
  • Design experiments to characterize the OSA behavior.
  • Verify device performance after calibration.
  • Plan calibration development and assist with the integration into the broader company roadmap.
  • Progress reporting to internal stakeholders.
  • Document calibration methods and procedures.

Benefits

We are a collaborative technology company, and we’re building a truly dynamic and rewarding place to work.
