Having already based its production facilities in Brixham, Dutch optical communications specialist EFFECT Photonics has broadened its local presence by occupying two units at EPIC – the renowned innovation center in Paignton. The facility’s modern lab and offices will help in developing the company’s manufacturing and engineering activities.
Existing tenants of the Electronics and Photonics Innovation Centre (EPIC), which is dedicated to photonics and electronics, include a number of multinationals in this field. It provides various services to support their technological innovation and encourages collaboration between businesses and research institutions.
The new tenant at EPIC leverages photonic integration to deliver unlimited data transmission capacity and internet bandwidth to everybody, everywhere, and through every available device. Its latest optical transceiver technologies are expected to sustain the rollout of 5G mobile networks.
In 2015, those technological advances led EFFECT Photonics to Brixham, to set up production in a highly tech-focused environment. The Torbay area has attracted tech talent from near and far, and it’s no wonder that today people refer to it as the ‘Silicon Valley of the South West of England’.
“We had previously enjoyed various positive interactions with EPIC over the years and it made good business sense to explore how we could intensify this contact. The move will allow us now to begin using state-of-the-art assembly equipment,” explains Andrew Stimson, Operations Project Manager at EFFECT Photonics.
“We strongly feel EPIC has the ideal environment to develop the foundations for packaging our next-generation products. Besides our lab and offices, we benefit from EPIC’s equipment and services, including a clean room and various meeting rooms. We already have working relations with two other EPIC tenants, Bay Photonics and Davies and Bell. It’s both challenging and rewarding to co-operate with other photonics specialists to enhance our own fast, affordable, sustainable and effective communication technologies.”
The move to EPIC should also generate new job opportunities, building on campaigns already in place to find tech talent for company locations in Eindhoven and Brixham.
– About EFFECT Photonics –
EFFECT Photonics delivers highly integrated optical communications products based on its Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical System-on-Chip technology. The key enabling technology for DWDM systems is full monolithic integration of all photonic components within a single chip and being able to produce these in volume with high yield at low cost. With this capability, EFFECT Photonics is addressing the need for low cost DWDM solutions driven by the soaring demand for high bandwidth connections between datacenters and back from mobile cell towers. Headquartered in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, with additional R&D and manufacturing in South West UK, with sales partners worldwide. www.effectphotonics.com
– About the Electronic and Photonics Innovation Centre (EPIC) –
EPIC is a centre of excellence, supporting technological innovation and promoting collaborative activity between businesses and research institutions. It focuses on supporting high potential companies and encourages investment into Torbay’s microelectronics and photonics sector, and in the wider Heart of the South West. EPIC is managed by TDA, a trading name of Torbay Economic Development Company Limited. As a Centre of Excellence, EPIC will provide the ideal environment for both small and large technology companies within the sector. The Centre will provide opportunities for collaboration, R&D, design, new product development. The facility has established links with academia and research institutes, and other European clusters as well as looking to develop global partnerships.
